Babies love the sound of a familiar voice long before they understand a single word. Ten minutes with a picture book each evening is one of the simplest habits you can start in the first year.
Choose sturdy board books with bold pictures and one or two words on each page. Let your baby touch, turn and even chew the pages. That is part of reading at this age.
Point at the pictures, name what you see and pause so your child can answer with a smile or a sound. Repeat the same favourite books often; repetition builds confidence.
Keep a small basket of books next to the bed and in the living room, so a story is always within reach.
